My work finds form through Drawing installation, text, sculpture, moving image and lecture
performance. Stemming from systems of politics and value - how we mediate those systems
through gender and sexuality + non-static ideas of the Other resulting in a remix of public and
private mythologies.
So much of how I have constructed my personhood has been through the rampant unrelenting
collection of snippets of others voices and images, cut up and gathered and pasted and presented
again or as Halberstam puts it ‘a scavenger methodology’.Finding ways of pasting ideas together to
find structure to my own thinking. There's also something to be said about this process of thievery
that unroots capitalist ideas of ownership that I am drawn to.
In this process of collage I am interested in acknowledging marginalisation however true and in
effect can be weaponised, coupled with other privileges to employ Otherness as armour against
accountability. If in my work a language in which critique occurs then I must bend that finger right
back around.
While I’m doing this I'm also keenly conscious of conspiracies around queerness that are employed
as methods of political marginalisation. Horror stories create political scapegoats of an Other to
distract from the actions of the ruling class. This has become a distinctly clear tactic with the ever
widening class division between the ultra wealthy and the general populous. Conspiracy as a notion
has potential as a tool to be reappropriated in which to critique inward and outward providing a
space in which to problematise multiple sites of enquiry.
